Pitcher stats ahead of Game 3 tonight

In the pantheon of “brewer murderers,” the name Jose Quintana appears often.

The left-handed hitter has had plenty of experience against the Milwaukee Brewers throughout his career throughout the National League Central – he's played for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates.

He will get the ball for the New York Mets in a true winner-take-all game on Thursday, the Brewers' first such postseason game since the 2019 wild-card game in Washington.

Quintana's career ERA of 2.98 against the Brewers in 23 games (22 starts) is pretty strong, although not his best mark against any team. He also hasn't won against the Brewers since 2019, when they were 0-3. That includes an 0-2 mark this season, with the Brewers picking up two wins over Quintana in the regular season series against the Mets at the start and end of the year.

Quintana had a 3.77 ERA in three games against Milwaukee last year, allowing six earned runs in just over 14 innings. He had one inning of relief against Milwaukee in 2021 and a gaudy 5.81 ERA against the Brewers in 2019, when he hit seven home runs and 20 runs in 31 innings.

Yes, before that Quintana was against Milwaukee Elite. The 35-year-old has been solid for the Mets this season, posting a 3.75 ERA in 170 innings, his highest workload since 2019.

When the Mets signed Quintana to a two-year deal at the end of 2022, he joined a much different rotation than the one that came to American Family Field for the playoffs. The Mets had Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Carlos Carrasco and were close to signing Kodai Senga, who had a great rookie season but missed most of this year due to injury.

Verlander and Scherzer were traded during a disappointing 2023 season, while Carrasco was claimed off waivers and ultimately parted ways with the Mets after the season. With Senga out, Quintana started the opening day against the Brewers this season. The game became known for a brawl between the teams and was, at least in retrospect, the big league debut for Jackson Chourio, whose fifth-inning single against Quintana was his first big league hit.

The Brewers won that game 3-1. Milwaukee hopes that's a blueprint for Thursday: The Brewers defeated Quintana and the Mets 6-0 on the final Saturday of the season. In that game, Jared Koenig served as the opener, Thursday's starter Tobias Myers pitched four error-free innings, and Milwaukee's top bullpen powered the win from there. Quintana was hooked for two earned runs in 4⅓ innings.

Quintana has never faced the Brewers in the playoffs, but made an impressive seven starts against Milwaukee during the 2018 season, when Milwaukee reached Game 7 of the National League Championship Series and the Cubs lost 5-2 in those games.
