Pitt names Allen Greene as next athletic director

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The University of Pittsburgh has announced that it has hired Allen Greene as the school's athletic director.

Pitt officially announced Friday morning that Greene will begin his term on November 1st.

“Pitt Athletics is the front porch of the University of Pittsburgh and serves as an important access point for so many across our campus, our region, our country and the world,” said Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel. “In Allen Greene, we have a proven national leader who embodies the Pitt Way and has the full experience and intangibles to elevate our athletics program competitively and in the classroom. In my conversations with Allen and many others who know him.” Well, it's clear that he will successfully lead us into the new world of intercollegiate athletics.

Greene comes to Pitt from the University of Tennessee, where he has served as senior associate athletics director since December 2023. During his time in this role, Tennessee has seen annual revenue increase by more than 30%.

Prior to Tennessee, he served for a year as the associate athletics director for external relations and business development at the University of Mississippi.

He also served as the athletics director at Auburn University from 2018 to 2023. During that time, the university has had eight SEC championships and 47 programs ranked in the top 25 nationally.

“I am extremely grateful and honored to be given the opportunity by Chancellor Gabel to join the University of Pittsburgh, an institution and athletic tradition that I have long admired,” said Greene. “It was clear from my first conversation with Chancellor Gabel that Pitt has the highest ambitions in every endeavor it undertakes. This gives me enormous energy and is a challenge that I fully accept. I am inspired and fully inspired by Pitt Athletics' storied history.” I want to help our Panthers achieve even greater success in the future. As a collegiate athlete, Greene was a three-year starter for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team and also earned a degree in finance in 2000. In 1998, he was selected in the ninth round by the New York Yankees and spent three years with their team, going through a minor league system before returning to school and earning an MBA from Indiana University.

Beginning November 1, Greene will commute between Knoxville and Pittsburgh as he assumes all remaining duties at the University of Tennessee.
