Recognizing the importance of mental health in the workplace on World Mental Health Day

Too often, people with mental health problems encounter misunderstanding, rejection and isolation. Addressing this problem is key to building healthier and more inclusive societies. That's why we celebrate World Mental Health Day on October 10 every year, with this year's theme being to prioritize mental health in the workplace.

To mark this important occasion, the Commission has presented one EU support package against stigmatization. The Commission will work with national authorities on implementation and connect them with mental health stakeholders to enable inclusive and informed policy-making.

Combating stigma is about more than just policy decisions. For this reason, the Commission has also launched the new campaign “In this together”. This will reach people across the EU to challenge misconceptions and promote greater understanding and acceptance of mental health. In addition, national action in the education sector will be supported by distributing educational materials to schools across Europe to raise awareness and normalize mental health.

In addition, an updated tracker was published today to monitor progress on the 20 flagship initiatives that are part of the EU's comprehensive approach to mental health. Launched in 2023, this approach offers financing opportunities worth €1.23 billion, supporting Member States directly and indirectly. Its aim is to ensure (i) appropriate and effective prevention, (ii) access to quality and affordable mental health care and treatment, and (iii) reintegration into society after recovery.

According to a 2023 EU survey, almost one in two people (46% of the EU population) have experienced emotional or psychosocial problems such as depression or anxiety in the last 12 months. The stakes are high, which is why the EU is committed to creating a future in which everyone's mental health is promoted, valued and protected.
