Rishabh Pant bowled for 99; KL Rahul squats, Kohli and Jadeja devastated as he misses India's all-time record

There was uncertainty surrounding Rishabh Pant before the start of play on day four of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After the wicketkeeper suffered a blow to his knee, it was unknown whether he would come to bat in the second innings or not. However, batting at number 5, the left-hander along with Sarfaraz Khan dominated the New Zealand bowling line-up to help Rohit Sharma and Co. gain a decisive lead. However, heartbreak was in store for Rishabh Pant as he was dismissed for 99, just one run shy of his 7th Test ton, which would have taken him past MS Dhoni's all-time record for most Test runs by an Indian keeper-batsman.

As soon as Rishabh Pant was dismissed, Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja, who were in the dressing room, were distraught. Virat Kohli, who was sitting right behind them, couldn't believe it. KL Rahul, who was on the non-striker side, was also seen on his back legs. However, the audience gave Rishabh Pant a standing ovation.

Rishabh Pant's innings was, as usual, studded with big players. He didn't let the spinners Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra settle down by constantly going over the top and sending them to boundaries and top performances.

Pant didn't even spare the six-foot William O'Rourke, who charged down the track to meet him, straight towards the boundary. After a cloudy first session, the sun came out in the second and Rishabh made the most of the batting-friendly conditions.

However, it was William ORourke who finally had the last laugh as Pant dragged the ball back onto his stumps. The ball shot up from close range and caught Pant by surprise in defense, which ultimately led to his dismissal.

Rishabh Pant was dismissed for the seventh time in the 90s

It is also worth noting that Pant was dismissed seven times in the longest format during the nervy 1990s. If he had implemented all of this, his current test ton value would be 13.

It is pertinent to mention that Rishabh also missed the entire 2023 cricket calendar after he was involved in a horrific car accident.

Coming back to the ongoing Test against New Zealand, Team India managed to take the lead thanks to centuries from Rishabh and Sarfaraz. Earlier, Sarfaraz was dismissed by Tim Southee's bowling. The right-handed batsman made his way back after scoring 150.

Earlier, India had 46 runs in the first innings and the Kiwis took a 356-run lead after scoring 402 runs in the first innings.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also scored half-centuries for India in the second innings. The test match went extremely quickly considering that the first day was canceled due to rain and not a single ball was bowled.

The first session was canceled early on the fourth day due to rain. However, the proceedings were resumed in the afternoon session.
