Seattle Reign FC falls in Utah – Seattle Reign FC

Seattle Reign FC falls in Utah – Seattle Reign FC

In Sandy, Utah, the Reign lost 3-0 to the Royals. Seattle defended from the first whistle and played with 10 players on the field from the 16th minute of the game as midfielder Angharad James-Turner received two yellow cards early on.

The game got off to a rough start for the Reign as Utah scored in the third minute of the game. After a forced corner, the home team played the ball into the penalty area and chaos ensued as it was loose in front of the goal line. Forward Cloé Lacasse provided the finishing touch for Utah, sending the ball into the net and taking an early lead.

When the game started again, James-Turner was shown her first yellow card for a foul in midfield. 12 minutes later, James-Turner was booked again and sent off, leaving Reign one player down for the remainder of the game.

The Reign conceded a second goal in the 20th minute of the game. An initial scoring chance from forward Ally Sentnor was blocked, but only as far as Lacasse, who ran into the box and fired a powerful shot to double Utah's lead.

Seattle continued to defend and found an offensive opportunity in the 38th minute when striker Jordyn Huitema delivered a cross into the box, but Utah goalkeeper Mandy Haught was there to collect it. Before the halftime whistle blew, Utah scored its third and final goal. Utah midfielder Claudia Zornoza pushed the ball to Lacasse, who again pushed the ball into the net.

After halftime, the Reign earned their only corner of the game after five minutes of play. As the corner was taken, Huitema was pushed into the 18-yard box by Utah defender Madison Pogarch. The referee initially awarded the Reign a penalty kick, but upon review changed the decision to a corner kick because the ball was not yet in the field of play at the time of the foul.

The ensuing corner kick resulted in Seattle's only shot on goal of the entire game, which came from the head of Huitema. Although the team moved forward a little further in the second half and scored two more shots, it was not enough to make up for the three-goal deficit. The loss in Utah officially eliminates the Reign from playoff contention.
