Shanghai Masters: Berrettini beats O'Connell in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 event

Shanghai, October 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini edged out Australian Christopher O'Connell in a thrilling second-round match at the Shanghai Masters on Thursday. Berrettini won the game 7:6 (9), 7:6 (6), marking his first win of the season at the ATP Masters 1000 level. In a contest that lasted just over two hours, Berrettini fired 33 winners, including 11 aces. After the world number 45 was eliminated from the second round in Tokyo due to an abdominal injury, she struggled with both physical setbacks and the psychological toll of constant injuries.

“I’m happy to be back and healthy,” Berrettini said after the game. “Too many times I've thought about how to stay healthy and that's something I've grown a bit tired of. One of the goals of the game was not to think about my condition, but to just enjoy the game, enjoy the atmosphere, what I did.

In the two-set tiebreak battle, Berrettini fended off two set points in the first set tiebreaker. O'Connell was ranked 71st in the world and pushed the Italian hard, but Berrettini's experience and composure in the crucial moments made the difference.

Berrettini next faces the highly anticipated duel with Denmark's Holger Rune in the second round. A rivalry developed between the two, with Rune having a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head duels.

In their last meeting at the Cincinnati Masters in August, Rune made a comeback and defeated Berrettini after losing the first set. Now the Italian will try to equalize the direct series in Shanghai.
