Sinner will face Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters

World number one Jannik Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters after both won in straight sets on Wednesday.

Sinner put some old demons to rest by beating American Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), while Medvedev defeated Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 .

Shelton, ranked 16th, knocked out Sinner at the same stage last year, but on Wednesday the Italian looked confident from the start as he won in 88 minutes.

The US Open champion prevailed in the ninth game of the first set, taking the lead on a long shot from Shelton and then dominating the second set tiebreak.

“It was very difficult, you don't have that much control when you play against him… I just tried to stay mentally strong,” Sinner said.

World number five Medvedev and Tsitsipas met for the 14th time.

The Greek started the second set strongly and broke in the first game, but Medvedev broke in the fourth and eighth sets and advanced.

Medvedev and Sinner have met four times this year in the final stages of tournaments.

Sinner defeated Medvedev in the Miami semi-finals, US Open quarter-finals and Australian Open final, but the Russian ended the Italian's hopes in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in an epic five-set battle.

“I will bring the fight,” Medvedev said.

“I could have done much better at the US Open… I didn't fulfill my potential enough in that game. So tomorrow I will try to exploit this potential,” he added.

Also in the quarterfinals is world number two Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Sinner in the final of the China Open a week ago.

The 21-year-old took on the experienced Gael Monfils and won 6-4, 7-5, which was his 12th win in a row.

The 38-year-old Frenchman had upset Alcaraz in their last meeting in Cincinnati in August, and the Spaniard admitted it was “playing on his mind” during the game.

“I'm just very, very happy that I won the game and that I stayed calm the whole game,” he said.

“Playing against Gael is never easy… You have to concentrate on every ball,” he added.

Four-time Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic and world number three Alexander Zverev will also be in action on Wednesday.
