Software company CEO Lindon mourns after falling to his death in Zion National Park | News, sports, jobs

A Lindon-based software company is mourning the death of its CEO, who fell to his death while canyoneering in Zion National Park just days before his birthday.

The National Park Service said a 40-year-old man died Saturday after falling about 150 to 200 feet while canyoneering with three others near the exit of Heaps Canyon in the park.

“The group of four was following their permitted route through Heaps Canyon when the incident occurred,” an NPS news release said.

The victim was identified as Justin Bingham by his company Opiniion, a software company that works with property management companies to improve resident satisfaction.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter lifted Bingham to an area near Watchman Campground. Crews worked to provide aid and Life Flight arrived to transport him to a hospital. However, he was pronounced dead before boarding, according to park officials.

More than 50 people from multiple agencies responded to the incident.

“Justin was involved in a tragic accident while pursuing one of his greatest passions – exploring the outdoors,” Opiniion said on his website Monday.

Bingham is described by his colleagues as an eternal optimist who always believed that everything would work out.

He stood out for his love and respect for the members of the Opiniion team.

“Justin knew each of us by name and made a point to greet each and every person when he came into the office,” the company said. “We never doubted his love for us and for those with whom he was associated.”

The company called him a visionary who valued building meaningful relationships and having a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

According to his Instagram account, Bingham leaves behind a wife and four children.

The Bingham family often shared their lives through a YouTube channel called Our Life In 'Holland', which has over 143,000 subscribers.

“Justin wasn’t just a leader here at Opiniion – he was a mentor, a father and a friend to many of us,” Devin Shurtleff, co-founder and chief operating officer of Opiniion, said in a statement. “He believed that the relationships we build are what make this work meaningful, and he truly lived that every day.”

Officials with a statement have asked for privacy and understanding for his family at this time.

According to the National Park Service, the remaining members of Bingham's group survived.

On Sunday, two of the three canyoners were rescued by a DPS helicopter, while Zion National Park search and rescue teams helped the third rappel out of the canyon, the release said.

It is unclear how Bingham and the three others knew each other.

Bingham would have turned 41 on Tuesday.

“We will always remember his optimism, kindness and hard work that got Opiniion to where it is today,” the company said.
