Sonic fans are divided over the leaked Sonic x Shadow generation change

Sonic x Shadow Generations While the release isn't scheduled for a few days, the game has already leaked online. As a result, fans have seen some of the changes coming their way from the original version of Sonic Generationsand some fans are happier than others. One change revealed involves an exchange between Sonic and Amy. In the original, when Sonic discovers a surprise party for his birthday, the bruiser isn't particularly nice to Amy and covers her face with his hand. In the new version, Sonic no longer does this and Amy is seen holding out a pair of pink and blue cupcakes.

Fans were pretty divided over this change. On the plus side, Sonic is less of an idiot than in the original version. A large part of Amy's early characterization is that she was shown to be obsessed with Sonic, while he sometimes cruelly rebuked her advances. The slight change makes Sonic seem more friendly towards her, while her advances are more subtle. This is something that many Sonic fans have wanted for years; Sega won't suddenly bring the two characters together, but fans have long been calling for Sonic to be friendlier to Amy. This is clearly a step in that direction!

All of this also makes sense when you consider how Sega has tried to convey Sonic across different media. Sonic's previous attitude has been toned down somewhat over the years, making him somewhat gentler and friendlier. It's hard to imagine Sonic sticking his hand in one of his friends' faces these days, making this moment dated compared to recent Sonic games. However, some fans have argued that Sega is now stripping Amy of the elements that made her a character in the first place. The argument is that Amy had more definition when she fell head over heels for Sonic, and holding that back makes her less interesting. Given this, some fans actually preferred the original version of this sequence Sonic Generations.

As the Sonic series continues to grow in popularity, it's likely that Sega will continue to find ways to modernize these characters and make them more accessible to audiences of all ages. If it helps these characters endure and find new fans, that's certainly a good thing! Sonic and Amy are not alone in this regard; Sega has also toned down Shadow quite a bit in recent years. Sega has noted that we likely won't see the character with weapons like he did in the series Shadow the hedgehogand that's another change that's probably for the better!
