South Dakota 27-17 Youngstown State (Oct. 19, 2024) Game Recap

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Charles Pierre Jr. scored two touchdowns and a game-high 153 yards rushing and South Dakota defeated Youngstown State 27-17 on Saturday night to secure its first win at the Penguins' Stambaugh Stadium.

South Dakota (6-1, 4-0) went 0-6 on the road against Youngstown State (2-6, 1-6). The Coyotes, ranked fourth in the FCS coaches poll, shut down the Penguins in the second half and won five straight.

Beau Brungard threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brandan Serrano in the first quarter and he ran for an 11-yard score early in the second quarter to give the Penguins a 14-0 lead.

The Yotes responded with Aidan Bouman's 48-yard touchdown pass to Quaron Adams. Pierre's 21-yard TD run made it 14-1. Andrew Lastovka's 39-yard field goal just before halftime gave the Penguins a 17-14 lead.

Pierre broke loose with a 50-yard touchdown run with 5:10 left in the third quarter. Pierre finished with 21 runs, matching his career high.

Will Leyland hit field goals of 23 and 35 yards for the Yotes in the second half, while Lastovka missed from 51 and 47 yards.

Bouman was 12 of 18 passing for 223 yards.

Brungard completed 22 of 31 passes for 208 yards and added another 69 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
