State report cards show the majority of Horry County schools are rated “excellent” and “good.”

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Horry County Schools receives a passing grade from the state of South Carolina.

The South Carolina Department of Education has released its annual state report cards for the 2023-2024 school year.

In the report cards, each school receives an overall rating of “very good”, “good”, “average”, “below average” and “unsatisfactory” on a 100-point scale.

In Horry County, 36 of the 50 county schools (72%) were rated excellent or good, with the remainder rated average. No school in the HCS district received a below average or unsatisfactory rating.

Each school also receives ratings on key report card indicators, such as: B. student performance on state and national tests, student growth, and graduation rates.

Report cards show the district's on-time graduation rate increased from 86.3% in 2024 to 82.1% in 2023. HCS said this is the highest graduation rate the district has recorded since implementing the current accountability system in 2018.

Over 77% of the HCS graduating class of 2024 were considered college or career ready, an increase of 12 points compared to the previous year.

The district's overall student achievement in reading, writing and mathematics is above the national average.

In reading and writing, HCS scored 61.5%, compared to 54.1% statewide. And in math, HCS received a score of 50.8%, while the state received an overall student performance score of 42.8%.

It is important to note that early childhood schools, elementary schools, alternative schools, and academy schools do not receive state report cards, and charter schools are not included in the count.
