Strong autumn storm hits New Mexico

Numerous showers and storms have already developed across New Mexico this afternoon. The temperatures remain cool.

Ahead of the fall storm, upper arm moisture over New Mexico increased today. This increased humidity leads to widespread showers and storms. Showers began over the mountains and western New Mexico in the early afternoon. Rainfall will increase throughout the day. It will be strongest over the mountains. This can lead to flooding in burn scar areas.

A strong area of low pressure is moving toward New Mexico today. By Friday, the low will settle southwest of the Four Corners. This low pressure will be responsible for windy conditions and storms across New Mexico this weekend.

Windy conditions are expected across central and southwestern New Mexico on Friday. Chances of rain will be high across the state. The potential for severe storms exists across eastern New Mexico. Saturday will be similar to Friday in terms of wind and rain. Saturday's rain and storms will cover a larger area in the southwest than Friday. The risk of severe storms is slightly greater on Saturday than on Friday. But still isolated in eastern New Mexico.

It's starting to snow on the mountain peaks! Several ski resorts in northern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado are already seeing some snow accumulation. More snow is expected at these higher elevations this weekend.
