Tesla is issuing its fifth Cybertruck recall this year

Topline

Tesla has recalled more than 27,000 Cybertrucks because of a software problem that could prevent the rearview camera from displaying images, violating federal regulations and increasing the risk of a crash. This is according to a regulatory filing on Thursday, the fifth notification for Tesla's new pickup truck this year.

Important facts

According to a filing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 27,185 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024.

Tesla told regulators that under unspecified conditions, the affected Cybertrucks may not complete the shutdown process before turning back on, which could result in the reversing image not being displayed within two seconds.

Delayed rearview camera display can affect the driver's view behind the vehicle and increase the risk of an accident, according to regulators.

Vehicles with backup cameras in the U.S. are required to display an image within two seconds of turning on, the NHTSA said, and some of the Cybertrucks were unable to display an image for up to eight seconds.

Tesla received 45 warranty claims and four reports that may be related to the defect, but there are no known accidents or injuries.

Tesla said it fixed the issue on September 19 with a free over-the-air software update for the rearview camera, ensuring it meets regulatory requirements with a two-second response time.

Big number

4,438,910. According to NHTSA data, Tesla has recalled that many vehicles in the US this year, although most recalls were resolved through over-the-air software updates.

Important background

Tesla has issued five announcements for its Cybertrucks so far this year. The automaker began shipping the Cybertruck last November after a two-year delay due to production issues and battery supply constraints. In February, Cybertrucks were among 2 million vehicles recalled by Tesla because of small font sizes on warning signs, which regulators said could increase the risk of accidents. Tesla recalled nearly 3,900 Cybertrucks in April because the accelerator pedals could become stuck and cause the vehicles to accelerate unintentionally. In June, two notices were issued for Cybertrucks after Tesla said some of the pickups were equipped with defective windshield wipers and improperly attached trunk panels that could come loose and pose a road hazard.
