The director of the original “Silent Hill 2” is “not happy” with the limited camera of 23 years ago and prefers the modern perspective of the remake

Now that Bloober's Silent Hill 2 remake is out, the director of the original 2001 Silent Hill has shared his thoughts on this reimagining of his work and is full of praise.

In a series of tweets, Silent Hill 2 director Masashi Tsuboyama initially said he was “very happy” about the remake and how a new generation can play the horror classic. “It’s been 23 years,” he said. “Even if you don't know the original, you can just enjoy the remake for what it is. Whether it is good or bad has no bearing on the original.”

Tsuboyama then discussed the change in camera angle from the limited camera angle of the original to the modern over-the-shoulder camera angle of the remake. This change – discussed by fans in the context of the original tank controls' crucial role in Silent Hill 2's notoriously oppressive atmosphere – has a “significant impact” on everything from combat to level design to art. “While the impact on the story may be relatively small, it brings a big change to the feel of the game,” he added.

It sounds like Tsuboyama was in favor of the change, saying, “The over-the-shoulder look definitely adds to the feeling of realism.” In other words, it makes me want to see the even more immersive remake of Silent Hill 2 play.”

Tsuboyama, as before, said he wasn't happy with the original game's camera, but this time added some context as to why it had to be as limited as it was on the PS2 in 2001.

“Games and technology are constantly evolving, resulting in significant differences in limitations and levels of expression,” he explained. “This is a common problem in media art in general, but it is not easy to maintain and appreciate the environment of the time.

“To be honest, I'm not happy with the playable camera from 23 years ago. Depth and angles were limited by the machining load,” he said. “It was a continuous process of hard work that went unrewarded. But that was the limit.”

Honestly, I'm not happy with the playable camera from 23 years ago.

One aspect of Silent Hill 2 Remake that Tsuboyama doesn't seem keen on is Konami's marketing for the game. He says, “It seems like they (Konami) aren't doing enough to convey the appeal of the work to the generation that doesn't know Silent Hill,” while pointing out the inclusion of the Mira the Dog Mask and the PS5 exclusive Robbie references the Rabbit Mask DLC pre-order bonuses.

The original Silent Hill 2 contained a lot of silliness in its horror, so Tsuboyama might be annoyed at the idea of players running through the game with the DLC masks on their first playthrough rather than their second or third playthrough.

Whatever the case, Silent Hill 2 Remake is well received by fans and critics, with IGN's review of Silent Hill 2 Remake scoring it an 8/10.
