The Pennsylvania Bakery “Cookie Poll” correctly predicted three elections

(NewsNation) — A Pennsylvania bakery is getting involved in politics, and voters are eating it up.

Lochel's Bakery in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, conducts a tongue-in-cheek “cookie poll” that has correctly named the next president in three elections since 2008. The bakery sells candidate-themed cookies with “Harris 2024.” and “Trump 2024” decorated in blue and red, respectively. The owners keep an accounting of cookie sales, which is included in their informal survey.

Trump is currently in the lead, said owner Kathleen Lochel. Their sales correctly predicted the 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections, but their 2020 cookie poll failed when Trump lost to President Joe Biden.

“I just think it brought people together in 2020. We always had a line. They wanted to support a small business,” Lochel said. “It’s not scientific. It’s for fun… Whatever color cookie they have, we’re happy to give it to them.”

Lines at the doors of the third-generation small business have grown and social media is in an uproar after Trump posted his support for the cookies on his social media platform Truth Social. People drive hours to buy the cookies in person, and they have shipped orders to Alaska and Hawaii.

“We had people here from Rhode Island and Connecticut yesterday because they can get it quicker than I can ship it,” Lochel said. “It’s amazing to see the support we’ve had for our small business.”

So far, they've noticed more red cookie customers than blue ones. Lochel's Bakery will report updated financial statements on Tuesday. This is the first vice presidential debate between Democratic Governor Tim Walz and Republican Senator JD Vance.
