The Rangers score 6 points and eliminate the Penguins in the season opener

Sam Carrick gave New York a 1-0 lead with his first shot on goal at 2:24 of the first period, holding off Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang to convert a Trouba point shot. Carrick made his Rangers debut after signing a three-year contract on 1 July.

Will Cuylle appeared to extend the lead at 9:48, but his goal was overturned due to an offside call by the Penguins.

Lafreniere then made the final score 2-0 at 17:23. After receiving a stretch pass from Panarin, he looped the puck around a slipping Marcus Pettersson and wrist-fired it from the left faceoff circle to the blocker's side.

“I think we came out of it pretty strong,” Jarry said. “Sometimes I was just a little relaxed. Lots of strange people rush out. If I save the second game, I think it will at least help the boys stick with it. …It's obviously tough. It's not the result you want.

“But it’s a long season. So we have to find our legs. I think we will do better here. We will learn from it.”

Kreider made it 3-0 at 19:48 with a wrist shot from the slot after a rebound of Trouba's one-timer.

“We had to get through the first 10 or 12 minutes. “Shesty made some really big saves at that point,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said. “Then I thought the last, maybe eight minutes of the first period, I thought we had it going offensively. Was able to generate that and was able to keep it up in the second third.”
