The son of the former New York star gives the Phillies home field advantage over the Yankees in the World Series

In the Phillies' 162nd game of the season in Washington, only one playoff scenario was at stake.

A win would secure home field advantage in the World Series over the New York Yankees.

Kody Clemens – son of former Yankees Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens – made a diving catch along the left field wall in the ninth inning with the bases loaded to secure the 6-3 victory. The Phillies finished the season with a record of 95-67, while the Yankees only managed 94 wins when they defeated the Pirates on Sunday.

Of course both teams have to get there.

The Yankees are No. 1 in the American League and would have had home-field advantage over the Phillies if the teams finished with the same record, as the three games the teams played in July were even.

The Phillies finished No. 2 in the National League behind the Los Angeles Dodgers after losing their first two games in Washington.

The Phillies didn't give it their all to secure their home game against the Yankees. First baseman Bryce Harper and catcher JT Realmuto did not play, and Nick Castellanos was retired early after earning a start in all 162 games.

Shortstop Trea Turner also came out of the game in the later innings.

With closer Carlos Estevez unavailable due to flu-like symptoms, as manager Rob Thomson explained in his postgame meeting with reporters in Washington, Jose Ruiz came in and attempted his first major league save.

The right-hander quickly loaded the bases before coming back and striking out Luis Garcia Jr. and James Wood. Juan Yepez then hit a first-pitch break ball deep to left that Clemens caught as it hit the left field wall.

Clemens is a utility player who has played first base, second base, third base and left field. It was his seventh game in left field for the Phillies this season.

Aaron Nola improved to 14-8 on the season but was retired after giving up a leadoff triple in the sixth, two outs shy of reaching 200 innings for the fourth time in his career.

The Phillies and Yankees will both open Division Series play on Saturday.
