The Trail Blazers forward is getting used to the new team

Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija began acclimating to his new teammates' game situations on Sunday in Sacramento.

The Blazers won 105-85. However, Avdija's statistical performance fell short of what would be expected from him this season.

Avdija shot just 2 of 8 from the field for five points. He also added five rebounds and two assists with two turnovers in less than 20 minutes. His subpar performance is not a cause for concern as he is unfamiliar with his new surroundings.

The adaptation process involves playing with some uncertainty.

“I’m trying to figure out the style of play,” he said after practice on Tuesday. “Find out how to play with the boys. It was my first official game since April last year. It was nice to be out there, running well and catching my breath.”

Avdija still has two preseason games to play before the regular season begins on October 23 at home against Golden State.

“I think we will be more connected,” he said. “We will be better.”

The Blazers acquired Avdija in a draft-day trade last June. He will start alongside Jerami Grant in the frontcourt.

Avdija said part of the adjustment is getting to know teammates' tendencies, their style of play, and their approach and preparation.

“I feel like every team is different,” Avdija said. “Every team plays at a different pace, in a different style. I'm still getting used to it. There are a lot of habits I made with Washington that I need to break now that I’m playing for Portland.”

This can prove difficult. Avdija has to figure out when to be aggressive and when to let the rest of the team take charge.

“I guess I shouldn’t be really aggressive,” he said. “But I feel like you have to put in a little bit of effort to see where you stand.”

Avdija expects him to fit well into what he calls a fast and athletic squad.

“A great, great group,” he said. “Of course I will adapt.”
