Tim Walz fears that people in his own state will vote to codify abortion but still vote Republican

Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) said the “distance” of people who want to vote to codify abortion in their own state but still vote for Republicans in Congress and the White House is “dangerous.”

“This is what concerns me: people who vote for abortion protection amendments in states like Montana, but then vote Republican. This discrepancy is very dangerous,” the Democratic vice presidential nominee said on Thursday’s episode of the “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast.

Abortion-related issues are on the ballot in 10 states this November, including Colorado, Maryland, Montana and Nebraska.

“We have to explain to people that you might codify it in your state constitution, but if you elect Republicans to the U.S. Senate, they're just going to change it and get the Supreme Court to change it at the federal level, and we're going to have one.” national ban,” Walz continued. “I get that a lot: 'Well, I'm just not that interested in politics.' My answer to that is: “Too bad; You're into politics and here's what you need to know about it.'”

“We have a lot of work ahead of us because, to me, this is a worrying trend,” Walz said. “We need to codify it at the federal level. We have to get it back in. We need to make sure it’s armored.”

He then encouraged listeners to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris to prevent Donald Trump from picking more Supreme Court justices.

“They’re going to put people in place to make decisions for our grandchildren,” he said.

Vice President Kamala Harris said that if elected, she plans to sign legislation to “restore reproductive freedom,” noting that former President Trump was responsible for the deaths of women who did not have access to abortion care.

In April, Trump bragged about ending abortion rights after appointing three Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion, to repeal the national abortion ban in 2022. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, also contradicted his stance on a statewide abortion ban.
