As west-central Florida assesses the aftermath of Hurricane Milton — and the southeastern U.S. continues its recovery from Helene — the National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye out for the next potential storm, which will be named Nadine.

Meteorologists had observed a system developing off the east coast of Florida, but it dissipated before becoming Tropical Storm Nadine.

Now observed: a system in the eastern tropical Atlantic. It is a few hundred miles west of the Cape Verde Islands, which lie off the west coast of Africa and are moving westward and could develop into a tropical depression. Further development is not expected until mid-next week at the earliest, with a 40% chance of the system forming over the next seven days, the NHC said.

Still, the tropics near the U.S. could remain calm for most of next week, AccuWeather forecasters say. However, they are forecasting a medium risk of tropical development from Thursday, October 17, to Saturday, October 19, in the western Caribbean, the region where Helene and Milton formed.

A vortex, an area of rotating air currents, is expected to form over Central America next week. “A more prominent area of showers and thunderstorms may form from this large, slowly rotating low-pressure area, and this may develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm,” AccuWeather senior hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said in the forecast.

Where is Tropical Storm Leslie?

Leslie was classified as a tropical storm on October 2, strengthened into Hurricane Leslie and weakened back to a tropical storm on Thursday. On Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said Leslie – about 975 miles west-southwest of the Azores – had degenerated into a trough and posed no threat to the United States

The storm is producing maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph, with stronger gusts, and is expected to gradually weaken over the next few days, the NHC said.

The figures cover a range of forecasting tools and models, and not all are created equal. The hurricane center only uses the four or five best-performing models in its forecasts.

When does the 2024 hurricane season end?

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which typically runs from June 1 to November 30, has more than seven weeks left. There have been 13 named storms so far this season. The next storms to form will be named Nadine and Oscar.

After about five relatively quiet weeks, the 2024 season – especially with the arrival of Helene and Milton – has become an above-average hurricane season Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.

With a value of 127 on the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, a metric that includes storm frequency, intensity and duration, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is considered to “officially meet the NOAA definition of an above-average season,” Klotzbach said on X-Wednesday.
