Two people are killed in the Kum-N-Go shooting in Sioux Falls

The assault-motivated confrontations earlier in the night included a misidentified group of motorcyclists

Two people were killed in a shooting Thursday around 9:30 p.m. at the Kum-N-Go gas station on the corner of 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue, Sioux Falls police officials said Friday morning.

A 23-year-old man died at the scene of the accident, a 44-year-old was taken to hospital and died shortly afterwards. Names are not being released at this time until next of kin are notified.

First report: Heavy police presence at the West 41st gas station late Thursday evening

Department spokesman Sam Clemens said the altercation began in the gas station parking lot when an SUV arrived and three male passengers got out, each with a bat in hand. A woman who was following the SUV in a separate car also got out. The SUV passengers' ages were 44 years old, 23 years old and a 14-year-old teenager.

The woman in the separate car, Darinda Janette Martinez, 42, allegedly pointed a gun at her during the altercation and was charged with aggravated assault.

Clemens said all three passengers in the SUV and Martinez are related.

The motive for the altercation at the gas station was said to be a previous robbery that had occurred on the 600 earlier that nightTh Clemens said it was a block of North Daisy Avenue involving the 23-year-old, who was later found in the SUV.

After the first attack, Clemens said, the 23-year-old went home and said he had been “jumped,” and then the others involved in the ensuing altercation got into their SUV and drove to Kum-N-Go, after a tip sent them there.

When the SUV arrived, the passengers immediately approached a group of motorcyclists in the parking lot, but Clemens said they were misidentified as participants in the robbery. According to the cameras, the motorcyclists involved were elsewhere in the city at the time of the first attack.

Still, the 23-year-old swung a bat at the head of a 26-year-old motorcyclist who had pointed a gun at him, then shot the 23-year-old, Clemens eyewitnesses said.

After the motorcyclist shot the 23-year-old, the 42-year-old woman pointed a gun at the motorcyclist, who then shot the woman, hitting her in the arm. The 44-year-old man then swung a bat at the motorcyclist. In response, the motorcyclist fired his weapon again, this time at the 44-year-old.

Meanwhile, an unrelated head-on collision occurred while the fatal shooting was being investigated. The car accident involved a driver who had a medical event, lost consciousness and struck another car. There were no serious injuries in the accident.
