Utah QB Cam is out indefinitely with his latest injury, Isaac Wilson will start in his place

Utah will be without quarterback Cam Rising for the foreseeable future.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Monday that Rising will be out “indefinitely” after suffering a lower leg injury in Friday night's 27-19 loss to Arizona State. The injury was the last injury suffered by the seventh-year quarterback during his career.

Freshman Isaac Wilson will start in Rising's place going forward. Whittingham did not have a specific timeline for Rising's recovery and it is unclear whether he will be able to play again this season.

“I can’t give you a timetable. It could be the rest of the season,” Whittingham said, via ESPN. “I don't know exactly how long it will be, but I know it will be a minute.”

Rising returned to the field for the Utes on Friday night after missing three games with a hand injury. He was hit in the pocket early and his right leg was rolled up as he was knocked to the ground.

Although he stayed in the game, he struggled the rest of the way. Rising threw 16 of 37 for 209 yards and three interceptions.

Rising first started at Texas in 2018, although he redshirted that season and then sat out all of 2019 after transferring to Utah. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his first game of 2020 and first suffered a concussion and then a knee injury in consecutive Rose Bowls in 2021 and 2022 during the 2023 season.

Although it is in its seventh season, Rising could return for an eighth year next fall if it chooses. While Whittingham said they're open to the idea, he's not sure that's what Rising wants.

“Now that we’re in the situation we’re in, that’s a possibility,” he said. “We have to clarify this in detail with the compliance department. And I'm not even sure Cam would be interested in going that route. He has a lot to think about and that's why he just needs to take a step back now and have the recent injury thoroughly diagnosed… That would be something we would talk about sooner rather than later.”

However, back in July, Rising wasn't too keen on coming back for an eighth season. Undoubtedly the situation is different now than it was three months ago.

“Seven is good enough for me,” he said. “But you never know. The cards are always on the table.”

Wilson will start Rising in his place. Wilson, the younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, has made three starts this season in Rising's absence. In the loss to Arizona on September 28, he went 20 of 40 for 280 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, despite leading the Utes past both Utah State and then-No. 14 Oklahoma State.

Utah, which is 4-2 this season, hosts TCU on Saturday.
