Vettaiyan review: A social justice story with star power

Superstar Rajinikanth Vettaiyan is based on a compelling core that explores the themes of justice and the moral dilemmas surrounding its implementation. Directed by TJ Gnanavel, known for Jai BhimThe film explores these themes with its characteristic depth.

Story : We are experiencing a golden era of social justice films that explore nuance from multiple perspectives and across multiple genres. Vettaiyan strengthens faith in the legal system over vigilantism. While the hero forms the core of the story and the character structures are intelligently designed, the situations and scenes lack anything new. The half-hearted commercial treatment further diminishes the film's potential. What could have been a classic sequel to Jai Bhim ends up being a mediocre effort.

Casting: The film features an ensemble cast including Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and Manju Warrier. It's clear that this star-studded cast is aiming to expand the film's commercial reach. Interestingly, the absence of a Kannada actor may have been a conscious decision, suggesting that the casting selection was not driven solely by business interests.

Rajinikanth delivers a solid performance but fails to achieve the same mass appeal as Prison guard. Among the supporting cast, Dushara Vijayan plays a key role around which the story revolves, while FaFa (Fahadh Faasil) provides comic relief and shines in one of the film's standout scenes. Amitabh Bachchan's commanding presence is a perfect complement to Rajini's.

Direction: TJ Gnanavel combines commercial elements with social justice and human bias in the investigative part of the first half. However, TJ Gnanavel's discomfort with commercial cinema is evident as conviction is noticeably absent in Rajini's crowd scenes.

Technical data: Anirudh's background music, especially the Hunter theme song, is the most significant contributor to creating the 'Rajini Effect'. The camerawork and art direction give this away Vettaiyan was produced on a medium budget in terms of production value.

Last word for TJ Gnanavel

In the world of instant gratification, encounters with the police can be the thing. The film beautifully underscores the importance of trust in law and order for long-term justice in a thriving democracy. This film is a compelling civics lesson, even if it's a little preachy.

What's the point of showing Dushara's gruesome, violent murder at least eight times in the film through multiple flash-cut scenes? Why? It is completely unnecessary and serves no purpose. The film deserves an “A” rating for this reason alone.

There is no dearth of commercial directors in Tamil cinema. If TJ Gnanavel went back to his roots and stayed true to his style, it would better serve the industry and allow it to reclaim a thoughtful, sensible filmmaker.

Rating: 3.25 out of 5
