Wayne Brady talks about being a father to two children with a 20-year age difference.

While chatting with PEOPLE at the 2024 Bring Change to Mind Revels & Revelations event in California, the 52-year-old actor opened up about the “different level of energy” he noticed in himself when he welcomed his nearly 2-year-old son, Val In contrast to his 21-year-old son Val, he raised his one-year-old daughter Maile, whom he shares with his ex-wife Mandie Taketa (48).

“It’s a different level of energy in parenting. “I got Maile when I was 30, and now with Val, as far as the physical energy it takes to walk around with him, I can still do it (but) it's a little harder,” he tells PEOPLE .

Brady is also co-parent with Sundance-Isamu “Sunny,” the son of Taketa and her boyfriend Jason Fordham, whom they adopted in September 2021. Running around with his little ones is a little more challenging, but there are also many aspects that solve the problem. This time Brady finds it easier.

“I think that with Val I benefit from the fact that I was there once, now I've been to the rodeo, so I think I'm a little better as a parent,” he says, adding that even Maīle has benefited from his remark improved parenting skills.

“Maīle even laughs, she says. 'The funny thing about Sunny and Mandie and Val and me is that you two are not the parents I grew up with. Val and Sunny get these parents who have been to therapy and worked on themselves. They know about parents. I grew up with you two and we all grew up together.''

Brady adds, “That’s the biggest difference: I did a little more parenting.”

As a guest The Jennifer Hudson Show On Tuesday, October 8, the actor opened up about what it took for his unconventional family to get to the healthy position they're in today while discussing their new reality show Wayne Brady: The Family Remix.

When asked how authentically he communicates his family dynamics, Brady replied, “So much therapy.”

“Therapy and family, and it feels great,” he continued. “This show and we created it, it was a way to enter into that second act of life and try to live in authenticity.”
