Weather in New York stays warm today, then temperatures drop – NBC New York

This week got off to a summery start with a number of days that moved into the 70s and 80s. Some places like Islip and JFK even set new record temperatures of several degrees. But we won't end the week the same way we started it.

In fact, we can expect a dose of reality from Thursday.

Even Wednesday isn't quite as warm as the previous days, but it still has a very summery feeling. This is thanks in part to high pressure to the east and a warm breeze from the south.

On Thursday a cold front will move through and change our southerly wind to one from the northwest. This will bring cooler, drier air into our region and drop our afternoon temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees.

No need to break out your winter coats and scarves – this isn't a big arctic shift in our temperatures.

Cooler temperatures on Thursday and Friday will still be a few degrees above the late October average. It's just going to feel like a drastic change because we've gotten used to the 70s and 80s this week.

Afternoon temperatures will remain in the 60s through Saturday before an increasing dose of cool air moves into the region, dropping highs into the upper 50s on Sunday.

Lows will fall into the 40s in the city and into the 30s to the north and west. It won't be the coldest air of the season just yet, but you'll definitely need a warm coat – especially when heading out the door in the morning.

If you like cool weather, enjoy it while it lasts! It will be gone almost as quickly as it arrived. Temperatures will climb back into the 70s by the middle of next week, and we'll stay mild through Halloween next Thursday.
