Lisa Marie Presley's unexpected death on January 12, 2023 was a result of a “small intestinal obstruction,” according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Presley was 54 – 12 years older than her father, Elvis Presley, who died on August 16, 1977. (Elvis died of a heart attack, according to the Shelby County Medical Examiner, although later reports suggested drug use contributed to his ill health.)

In a report released on January 14, 2023, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office attributed Lisa Marie Presley's death to “consequences of a small intestinal obstruction.” “Consequences” as a medical term refers to an aftereffect or secondary condition. The report cited Presley's previous “bariatric surgery” as a contributing factor to the death, but was not the immediate cause of death.

In Presley's case, the surgery was a gastric bypass, which reduced the size of her stomach and rerouted part of her small intestine into the smaller pouch. The surgery was performed in Dallas several years before her death and restricted Lisa Marie's food and calorie intake to allow her to lose weight.

On January 12, 2023, Presley was transported from her home in Calabasas, California, to nearby UCLA West Valley Medical Center after complaining of “stomach pains,” according to the coroner's report. She was “unresponsive” when an ambulance arrived at her home and was pronounced dead in hospital at 5:08 p.m

“During her hospitalization, she was noted to have a severely distended abdomen and diagnosed with severe metabolic acidosis” (a buildup of body toxins), the report said, citing the “constipation” that caused her death as “constricted small intestine “due to adhesions” – scar tissue – “that developed years ago after bariatric surgery.”

“This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery,” the report adds. “The manner of death is considered natural.”

In a side note, the autopsy report states: “Several tattoos were identified…The word 'Ben' is noted on the right hand.” “Ben” is a reference to Lisa Marie's son Benjamin Storm Presley Keough, who died on July 12, 2020 Died by suicide at the age of 27.
