Who is the backup quarterback after Tua Tagovailoa returns?

The Dolphins have several candidates for the backup role.

With Tua Tagovailoa returning to practice on Wednesday and intending to start Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, one crucial question remains.

Who will be Tagovailoa's backup against the Cardinals?

After activating Tagovailoa, the Dolphins will have three or more quarterbacks on the active roster before making a move.

Tagovailoa is not expected to be activated until Wednesday after he completes concussion protocol.

As of Monday afternoon, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel had not decided what the backup quarterback's situation would be.

“Not yet. That still needs to be decided,” McDaniel said. “Some information still needs to be collected.”

Some of this information may concern Huntley's status. Huntley started at quarterback in Indianapolis on Sunday. He left the Colts game with a shoulder injury and did not return to the game after exiting in the third quarter.

The severity of the injury was not disclosed. Information about Huntley is a minimum.

“My feeling is that I have no idea about it yet. It went from, “Okay, we'll keep you posted on whether he can come back into the game or not.” To “He won’t come back into the game”McDaniel said. “So there's still a lot going on in the evaluation process and I'll make my decision on that with the coaching staff and Chris (Grier).” That will probably come tomorrow where I kind of formulate those thoughts.

The Dolphins also need to assess their health – Thompson, who won the backup job in training camp. Thompson suffered a rib/chest injury against Seattle last month and hasn't played in a game since. Thompson was disguised and deployed as the emergency quarterback against Indianapolis.

Tim Boyle was added to the active roster for the game against Indianapolis. He came into the game when Huntley was injured. His status to remain on the roster when Tagovailoa returns is also uncertain.
