Why Tesla is recalling more than 27,000 vehicles

Tesla has filed another recall for its Cybertrucks – the company's fifth recall for the product since it was made available to customers last year. Around 27,000 Cybertrucks are affected by this recall. The reason for the recall is due to delays in the display of the rearview image on the dashboard, which “could increase the risk of a collision,” according to the company's Sept. 26 filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

On affected Cybertrucks, the rearview camera display may remain blank for up to 6-8 seconds after the vehicle is placed in reverse gear. Currently, NHTSA guidelines require vehicles to display the reversing image within 2 seconds of engaging reverse gear.

The recall notice explicitly mentions certain Cybertrucks that were manufactured between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024 as affected. In the filing and in a blog post on Tesla's website, the company says that drivers of Cybertrucks with this problem can still reverse by performing traditional shoulder checks and using their mirrors.

The recall request documents how the problem was discovered – as part of an internal compliance audit in September. After noticing the potential problems, Tesla “investigated the condition,” conducted tests and issued a voluntary recall. The day before the filing, Tesla said it had identified 45 warranty claims and four testimonials that were “possibly” related to the backup camera issue. However, the company is reportedly not aware of any accidents caused by the problem.

Tesla has published a recall search link on its website that customers can use to check whether their vehicle is affected by this current notice. The company also said in its blog post that the issue will be addressed through a software release, informing customers that they do not need to schedule a service appointment to repair the rearview camera display.

TIME has reached out to Tesla for comment.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has not yet commented on this Cybertruck recall, but previously called the vehicles “apocalypse-proof.” This is just the latest recall from Tesla in the past year. In January, the company recalled 2.2 million vehicles because of illegible warning light labels. The recalled vehicles again included Cybertrucks. The issue was eventually resolved with a software update, but the problems didn't stop there.

In April, Tesla recalled all MY 2024 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023 and April 4, 2024 due to defective accelerator pedals. In May, Tesla recalled 125,000 vehicles due to a problem with the seat belt signal. In June, another recall addressed a part of the truck's windshield wiper that could become detached and detached while driving.
