Will college football adopt the NFL's new kickoff style? Here's what Ohio State's Ryan Day thinks

Day said Troy Vincent — a former Wisconsin cornerback who is now the NFL's executive vice president of football operations — recently met with Big Ten coaches in California.

Vincent explained how the new kickoff would work and said data would be examined at the end of the season to see its impact.

“I haven’t seen it very much,” Day said. “I didn’t watch much NFL football. I've got my hands full here, but I've noticed a few in passing. It's interesting at least in terms of the schematics and what exactly is going on.

The NFL calls its new style “dynamic kickoff.”

The kicking team lines up on the opponent's 40 yard line, while the receiving team lines up between their 30 and 35 yards. Neither side other than the kicker and returner can move until the ball is on the court.

If the ball is caught between the 20-yard line and the end zone – the so-called “landing zone” – it must be returned.

A kick that goes into the end zone can be returned or taken as a touchback, bringing the ball to the receiving team's 30-yard line.
