Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will be aiming for the Major League Soccer points record in today's game against New England Revolution. The game begins at 6:00 p.m. ET (7:00 p.m. in Argentina) at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Messi is expected to play but will come off the bench, while his former Barcelona running mate Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are in the starting XI.

It's MLS Decision Day, also known as the final day of the 2024 regular season. Two more teams will be added to the MLS Cup Playoff field from the Eastern Conference, while the entire Western Conference will learn their seedings after today's games.

Inter Miami has already secured the MLS Supporters' Shield for the best record and is a No. 1 seed in the playoffs. But today's game is about making league history.

With a win, Inter Miami would have 74 points from the 2024 season. It would surpass the current mark of 73 points set by New England in 2021.

Here's the latest on Messi

Messi has just returned from international duty where he scored a hat-trick with two assists in Argentina's 6-0 win over Bolivia last Tuesday. Argentina also settled for a 1-1 draw in Venezuela on October 10th.

Messi has played a total of seven games and scored eight goals since returning on September 14 from a ligament injury in his right ankle during the Copa America final that sidelined him for two months.

Will Messi play in the 2026 World Cup?

Messi has not yet committed to playing for reigning champions Argentina at the next World Cup.

“I'm not exaggerating. I try to enjoy day by day. “When the time comes, we'll see,” Messi said of the next World Cup after accepting the MARCA America Award on Thursday.

“I don't like to speed up time or look forward. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can continue playing at this level to feel good and be happy. When I can do what I love, I am happy. I value that more than reaching the 2026 tournament. My goal is not to reach the World Cup, but rather to live everyday life and be healthy.”

Who will Inter Miami face in the MLS playoffs?

Inter Miami's first playoff game will take place on October 25th and the opponent has yet to be determined. It will play the winner of the Eastern Conference wild card game between the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds in the playoff picture on Oct. 22.

No. 8 DC United, No. 9 CF Montreal, No. 11 Philadelphia Union and No. 12 Atlanta United will battle for the final two playoff spots at MLS Decision Day on Saturday. No. 10 Toronto is eliminated.
