Will Mike McCarthy be fired? Jerry Jones asks a question after the loss

play

Jerry Jones turned 82 on Sunday. On this occasion, the Dallas Cowboys handed him their worst home defeat since 1988.

The Detroit Lions defeated the Cowboys 47-9 at AT&T Stadium. The win was a revenge of sorts for Detroit, which suffered a point loss to Dallas at the end of the 2023 NFL season, costing the Lions a chance at the NFC's No. 1 seed.

The Lions appeared to be playing with the Cowboys throughout the contest. Detroit coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson called several trick plays, including one that resulted in a 52-yard touchdown for tight end Sam LaPorta. The Lions frequently ran offensive lineman Dan Skipper toward the end of the 38-point win — a nod to offensive tackle Taylor Decker's unacknowledged two-point conversion from their contest last season.

The nature of the loss, which dropped the Cowboys to 3-3 on the season, raised all-too-familiar questions about head coach Mike McCarthy's job security.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones addressed these questions but did not respond kindly to the nature of the questioning.

NFL WEEK 6 WINNERS, LOSERS: Bengals and Eagles get the reinforcements they need

Will the Cowboys fire Mike McCarthy?

Jones was asked directly if the Cowboys would consider a midseason coaching change following their 38-point loss to the Lions.

“Oh, I haven’t even thought about that,” an irritated Jones told reporters. “I'm not considering that. Just so you’re clear, I’m not considering that.”

During the exchange, Jones was reminded that he had made a coaching change at one point during the season. In 2010, he fired Wade Phillips after a 1-7 start to the 2010 season before hiring Jason Garrett as interim coach.

The 82-year-old declined the question and suggested that Sunday afternoon was not the right time to discuss such topics.

“That would be a hypothesis. Do you think I'm an idiot in this regard? Or?” Jones was angry. “OK. Now, I'm not going to hypothetically speculate with you about whether I would consider a coaching change given the timing that we're sitting here with. I don't do that. Not at all.”

Jones will have plenty of time to reconsider his decision. The Cowboys will have a bye in Week 7 before returning for their expected clash with the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8.

Dallas could end up in third place in the NFC East heading into this game, depending on what happens with the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles in their Week 7 games against the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants.

Whatever the case, Jones isn't happy with the Cowboys' 3-3 record and current tie for second place in the NFC East standings. Still, he doesn't blame McCarthy entirely for these problems.

“We’re disappointed to be 3-3,” Jones said, according to ESPN. “I don’t necessarily blame McCarthy entirely for the three defeats. Players will tell you they had something to do with it too. His other employees will tell you. And the owner will definitely tell you.” She, he had something to do with it, so it's not just him.

Unless Jones changes his mind, it appears McCarthy will remain Dallas' head coach.

Mike McCarthy's coaching record

McCarthy entered the 2024 NFL season as an NFL head coach with a record of 167-102-2. That included a record of 125-77-2 with the Packers and a record of 42-25 with the Cowboys.

In his 17 full NFL seasons, McCarthy only had four losing seasons compared to 11 with double-digit wins. The 2024 season will be his 18th as a head coach at the NFL level since 2006.

Below is a look at McCarthy's records in charge of the Cowboys from year to year, as well as the team's ranking in the NFC East race:

  • 2020: 6-10 (third place)
  • 2021: 12-5 (first place)
  • 2022: 12-5 (second place)
  • 2023: 12-5 (third place)
  • 2024: 3-3 (tbc)

While McCarthy has often fared well in the regular season, he has an 11-11 record in the postseason. That includes a 1-3 record with the Cowboys and 6-9 since winning his only Super Bowl with the Packers in the 2011 playoffs.
