Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians live score, updates from ALCS Game 3

CLEVELAND – This is Clarke Schmidt's second postseason start as he looks to get the Yankees one game closer to the World Series.

“We know we're in a difficult environment,” Schmidt said ahead of Thursday's AL Championship Series Game 3 against the Guardians at Progressive Field.

But with a 2-0 lead in the games, “it’s business as usual,” Schmidt said. “We’re trying to get the job done as quickly as possible.”

Back in April, Schmidt pitched here and limited the Guardians to one run over five innings in the Yankees' 3-2 win. It's a cool 57 degrees and clear downtown this late afternoon… and here we go.

The Yankees strike first

OK, here's something to unpack. But first, Jose Trevino – who started just 14 games in the second half – hit a single against a crowded infield, and the score was 1-0 to the Yanks in the second inning.

After Volpe's walk, Alex Verdugo scored a brace (after a first break) and Trevino came through. And then the Yanks screwed up the bases again.

With runners on the corners, Trevino is picked off at first base and the Yankees lose a potential extra run. It's 1-0 for the Yanks and they're still a nightmare on the bases.

On that Verdugo double, Boone came out to…argue something. We'll find out later. He was out there for the second time today, the first time on the automatic strike against Soto.

Who is leading the Yankees in walks this postseason?

Not Judge, not Soto, but Anthony Volpe, leading off the second inning with his seventh free pass in seven games this postseason.

Guards threaten, Clarke Schmidt defends herself

Cleveland opened the first game with a walk and a bloop single, but Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt retired the next three batters – starting with a swing strikeout by the dangerous Jose Ramirez on a 1-2 curveball.

Jon Berti initially looked a little off balance fielding Josh Naylor's hot grounder, but Berti made the play unassisted and Lane Thomas left two runners in scoring position when Schmidt grounded him out.

If the Yankees have a lead later in the game, Anthony Rizzo threatens to be the defensive replacement at first base.

Gleyber Torres makes it in the opening period

Torres opened Game 3 with a walk on a full-count pitch from Matthew Boyd, the sixth time in seven 2024 postseason games he reached safely to start the Yanks.

But the lefty starter managed to overcome two walks in a scoreless top of the first strikeout with the help of center fielder Lane Thomas' sliding catch after a Juan Soto liner (after Soto had thrown a first strike for a timer violation).

Boyd beat both Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3 for 24 in the postseason) to move to No. 5, while Austin Wells (0 for his last 19) was on the bench and catcher Jose Trevino sat.
