“Zach Edey sees the debut of the poor Memphis Grizzlies”

“Zach Edey sees the debut of the poor Memphis Grizzlies”

After an illustrious college career, 7-foot-1 phenom Zach Edey has been one of the most anticipated NBA rookies since he was selected in the draft a few months ago. He officially made his Grizzlies debut on Wednesday, even though it didn't quite go the way he or Memphis fans probably hoped.

Edey picked up three early fouls in his first eight minutes played, confirming some concerns about his agility and foot speed entering the league. He didn't fare much better in the second half, picking up another three fouls in even less time. It was obvious that the Jazz's game plan was to attack Edey early and often.

Overall, he finished the game with five points on 2-for-4 shooting, five rebounds and the six fouls that led him to immediate exit from the game. It was obviously a tough night for Edey, who certainly intended to play more than a handful of minutes.

Nevertheless, the former boilermaker has already shown promising performances at the professional level.

Edey's most impressive preseason performance was a four-point win over the Pacers in which the center scored a blistering 23 points on 10-for-15 shooting, including nine rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Despite his preseason performance, he will have to learn to adjust to a minor role in the big leagues. At Purdue, Edey was the centrifugal player who had great success with almost 14 shots per game: 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

For the Grizzlies, the trio of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. are the focus. But Edey should be able to work his way into production with his massive frame and interior on both sides of the ball.

The Grizzlies and Edey will next face the Houston Rockets on Friday, October 25th.
